An anecdote about
Tom Cruise that was to feature in the autobiography of
Macho Man, the cowboy from the
Village People, has been axed after editors started shitting themselves about possible legal action from Cruise.
What could they have been worried about? A member of the band who did YMCA telling an anecdote about the famously litigious Tom Cruise (he once sued a gay porn star for $10m for claiming he had an affair with him (and won)). Surely no problem there!
Macho Man, real name Randy Jones (although that doesn't sound much more real), apparently exposes the party lifestyle of the Village People in their Eighties heydey in the book but editors have got cold feet about the anecdote and decided to pull it – but at least they pick up a nice bit of free publicity on the way.
We may never know what happened during the meeting, which took place at an Andy Warhol party before Cruise was properly famous, but apparently the book does have a story about Jones smoking weed at Studio 54 in front of President Jimmy Carter's mother, Lillian. WTF?
"We were in the corridor, and someone was passing around a joint. They handed it to Lillian, and she looked horrified. She didn't take a puff, but she handed it to me very expertly."
Just imagine Barbara Bush at Fabric or something. Mental.
