You may have already seen this but a complaint has been received at the BBC about the Doctor Who special on Christmas day ‘Voyage of the Damned’, a glossy episode which features a luxury cruiser called the Titanic encountering some difficulties.
The complaint is from Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the sinking
of the Titanic in 1912 who feels that it is an insensitive subject to
be portrayed on Christmas Day.
Honestly, she’s probably spent her whole life dining out on this story,
getting free drinks in pubs and being chaired around the room at
Titanic conventions, and you can be sure that she always mentions that
woman who dropped the necklace in the sea was based on her, and who can
argue? Because at 95 she’s the last one. She could tell us the captain
was a squirrel, with a hare lip and we’d have to believe her. And yet
she’s still not happy!
"I lost my father and he lies on that wreck. I think it is disrespectful to make entertainment of such a tragedy."
So full marks to the BBC spokesman who uttered the following beautifully worded and respectful ‘fuck off’.
"No offence was intended. Voyage Of The Damned is set on a space ship called The Titanic and not a boat."
Superb! Much more subtle than shouting ‘It’s not real!!!’ in a very loud voice right into her befuddled old face. Just.
