At last someone comes riding to the defence of embattled
Britney Spears, and it's a heavyweight pop ambassador whose words and actions demonstrate that this person is a walking continent of common sense. No,
not Paul Weller, it's
Sinead O'Connor, a woman who has made many of the mistakes young Britney made and still has the power to fill small auditoriums.
It's a surprise these two haven't been linked before. Sinead is very
much Britney Version 1.0 with the shaven head, the mentalist behaviour
and the complete inability to just go away when the world asks politely.
Performing at the LA Orpheum Theatre, Sinead dedicated a song called
'Rivers Of Babylon' to the troubled star. Unfortunately, it wasn't the
catchy Boney M one, but another of those dirges she has penned herself which have failed to trouble the charts - since they weren't written
by Prince.
"I've been keeping an eye on a girl who is getting a hard time in the
media lately, and I just want her to know that if she needs a
bodyguard, I'm her girl," said Sinead self-importantly, "I'd like to
dedicate this song to Britney Spears." Following it up with "I'm here
all week, try the veal."
And the crowd went wild, probably because the chicken in a basket was cold.
