We all know that Russell Crowe has piled on the pounds a bit since 'Gladiator', and is currently looking more Maximus Porkus than a lean, mean soldier type - so quite why director Ridley Scott was surprised by the actor's bulk is something of a mystery.
"I've shot with Russell for the past five weeks. That's why he's so sturdy-looking at the moment," explained Scott.
"He's losing weight. He was 30 pounds overweight to do the part."
Thirty pounds? Yeah, and the rest. He was beginning to resemble a sausage on a high heat, demanding to be pricked with a fork before it explodes. In 'Master And Commando' it was hardly believeable that his ship was able to sail in a straight line as it listed to starboard whenever Russell and his huge head went to look over the side.
Aptly, the movie being filmed is called 'Body Of Lies'. Russell must be gutted at being overlooked for the role he was born for, the part of Jabba the Hutt in 'Star Wars', but apparently George Lucas felt Russell was too heavy and surly to play the part convincingly.
