Oddest couple of the year? Mel Gibson and Britney Spears? Ridiculous, eh? Well, sources are claiming that the pair have packed their suitcases and jetted off for a little break to Costa Rica together, along with Britney's ever-watchful father, Jamie. The trio departed on a private jet yesterday morning from LA and plan to spend a blissful weekend together...

Obviously, Britney can't take the kids because she needs permission from the courts to take them out of the country, and she'd probably forget about them and leave them in a restaurant or something. It seems the whole trip is Mel's idea, after the pair shared a dinner together in March and managed to get through it without shaving their hair off or screaming 'Sugar Tits!' at a police officer.

Britney has appeared to be carrying a few extra pounds around the midriff recently, but her people deny that she's pregnant. And Mel couldn't be the father as he's a strict Catholic (stricter in fact than the current Pope) and happily married, so this must just be a beautiful friendship. Yes, a beautiful friendship.

Maybe they're just battling those drinking demons together? Or maybe Jamie Spears is jetting along for the trip so that he can hold the video camera for the inevitable 'stolen' sex tape?
