ANNOUNCEMENT – MARK FRITH
After an astounding career spanning 20 years, including over ten years at heat, where he was most recently Editor-in Chief, Mark Frith has decided to leave Bauer Consumer Media (BCM).
Mark will leave in mid-May 2008 to embark on a new venture, fulfilling a long-held ambition to write a book, having recently signed with publisher Ebury Press.
Mark joined Emap's Smash Hits in 1990, and in 1994, at the age of just 23, he was appointed Editor before leaving for Sky Magazine in 1996. Then ten years ago – Christmas 1997 - he was invited to join Project J as Deputy Editor. This was to become the iconic magazine - heat.
It's no secret that the original launch of heat was somewhat challenging, but since taking over the editorship of heat in 2000 and reinventing it from a unisex entertainment title into a women's celebrity weekly that has come to define the era, Mark has overseen sales increases from 65,000 to over 590,000. Mark has won every major British publishing award in the process including PPA Editor Of The Year twice and, in 2005, the BSME Mark Boxer Award for special achievement in UK magazine publishing. heat has also won countless awards since 2001.
Under Mark's editorship, heat has redrawn the magazine landscape, becoming THE must-have magazine week-in, week out, and a cultural reference point, spawning the phrase 'the heat generation'. Mark has also been a key contributor to the growth of heat as a cross-platform
brand with the launch of heatworld.com, heatworld Mobile and heat Radio last year.
Julian Linley, Editor of the hugely successful heatworld.com, and a former Deputy Editor of heat, has agreed to add Acting Editor of heat magazine to his remit and will work alongside Mark to ensure a seamless handover. Julian, who in just six month's since launch has made heatworld the UK's leading celebrity news site, will continue to edit heatworld.com and will remain Acting Editor of heat until we confirm Mark's successor, when Julian intends to return to his digital career.
Mark Frith commented:
"Taking heat from sales of 65,000 a week to over half a million has been an exhilarating experience. The heat team is truly exceptional and I wish them all the best for the future".
"I'm extremely excited about the book and look forward to a brand new challenge when I've finished the book." While we are obviously extremely sorry to lose Mark, please join me
thanking him for the huge success and support he has brought Emap/Bauer over the past two decades and for the legacy of a supremely talented team that will continue to drive the heat brand on to ever greater heights. We wish him the very best in the next stage of his career.
