Donald Sutherland has told how he wrote to his son,
Kiefer, every other day when he was in prison for drink driving over Christmas. He must have been stuck for things to say surely? Other than "you idiot, what the hell were you thinking?" or "you're really missing out on this delicious roast turkey with all the trimmings this we just ate".
Donald explained how he visited Kiefer whenever he could, but found it much easier to write a letter instead. Which sounds like the coward's way out to us.
Donald said:
"When he would call, you weren't prepared and when I
got to speak to him I didn't get to say everything I wanted to. I wrote
to him every other day though."
He continued:
"Jail was tough for him. He had 48 days inside, 23 hours a day in solitary. It was very, very cold. There were no windows. He had no community."
Well what did he expect, it's prison for fuck's sake!
And hopefully he's learnt his lesson. This kind of thing would never have happened to
Jack Bauer...
