Anthony H Wilson - RIP

We'd heard rumours yesterday afternoon and in the evening it was confirmed that Tony Wilson, broadcaster, record label founder, nightclub entrepreneur, wit, raconteur and all-round genius had died, aged 57, following a prolonged battle with kidney cancer.

Tony touched us all deeply and inspired generations. He said many wise and witty things, but one of our favourites was: "If there is a choice between the truth and the legend, choose the legend." Tony, you were a legend and will always be remembered dearly by us.

Our thoughts are with Yvette, your children and your friends. You will be sorely missed.

While I was no real fan of the bands that Wilson championed, there's no denying the man's passion for music & the things he believed in. Though he may have come across at times as a bit of a fool, his heart was nearly always in the right place. With tragedy & irony I understand that it was in fact a heart attack and not cancer that caused his untimely demise... perversely unpredictable to the end! R.I.P.

Then He achieved instant Morrison status. However - one or two listens to their pitiful back catalogue will throw up only two or three songs worth paying for. The Happy Mondays - one half decent album - 7/10 at best. A few real fucking clunkers on it. Stone Roses - first album is excellent. Aside from the fact its a complete Byrds rip off. Best thing Manchester ever came up with (apart from the Smiths) Anthony Wilson was an arrogant industry prat who had nothing to do with the re-emergence of the Manchester scene in the late 80s/early 90s. This bunch of half witted and rather mediocre bands would have made it without his help. Go back to your fucking bongs you hapless Manc cunts.
