The concept behind My Name Is Earl is genius.
Earl Hickey, a serial drinker, thief and general parasite to society, wins the lottery, only to promptly lose his ticket when being hit by a car. He puts this down to karma, and reckons that the only way to stop it is to compile a list of all the bad things he’s ever done, then go about putting them to rights. It’s a little like Last Of The Summer Wine in that it essentially involves a group of idiosyncratic friends spending their time doing unnecessary but well meaning things which they bugger up through ineptitude. In Last Of The Summer Wine we have a village almost entirely occupied by retired adults regressing to a state of childhood, and in My Name Is Earl, a trailer park almost entirely occupied by unemployed adults regressing to a state of childhood.
