His later stuff has a gravitas that can only come from being an old dying man and capturing it in song. I know I sound like a cunt here but I'm not a music critic and can't put it properly in to words. However, some of his songs are incredibly moving, and his choice of songs to cover was for the most part impeccable. Not many 70-somethings I know of would have even heard of Nick Cave, Beck, Nine Inch Nails or Soundgarden, never mind thinking they could add something to their songs.
