THE CORNER

US TV Shows in the UK Over produced, over scripted, over cliched, over polished, overly synical corporate trash. Made for the US market with references to US only issues (like politics, business, green card etc) and then flogged to 'trendy' tv stations over here for people who think they are with it and can 'relate' to a country they have no connection to. eg. Sex and the City was not about Bradford, no amount of Belinis in All Bar One Dewsbury will change that.

And US programmes from 1996 repeated on Sky about 25 times a day.

999 Spelling alert, CYNICAL and bring back "No Hiding Place"

And name a decent drama the uk has produced? I love most usa dramas. All the 4 channels rule!!
bollockyboo on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Over the last 10 years or so, the US has produced some quality drama so this post is utter shit.
Kanamaganza on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
thank you, bollockyboo

OP wind your neck in. Two words. The Sopranos. Genius TV. Who wants to watch drama about sodding Dewsbury, we see it enough on the news...
easywin on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Lazy Town gets pretty dramatic....
FoughtInNarm on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
They are bringing back Minder. With Shane fucking Ritchie.
BarryTook on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
What a load of shit. Which are the "Trendy" TV stations anyway? Channel 4? Do you still live in 1982? Why can't people just enjoy the programmes for what they are anyway. I enjoy the Sopranos and can do so without being a member of the mafia and being able to "relate" to it. I don't think i'm "with it" either. It's just a good show. You are a cunt and perhaps you should have put yourself in the corner.
felchlord5000 on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
I thought Sweeney and Minder were comedies.
RightRoyalBastard on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Well said Mr Took. *Doffs cap*.
kwebb on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Decent drama from the UK? We've given the world the very best. Byker Grove, Jossies Giants, Bergerac, By The Sword Divided. The US don't come close!
MrsMoon on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
I think there have been plenty of great British dramas, Our Friends In The North, Queer As Folk, Inspector Morse, Cracker, The Long Firm etc., but some US drama is amazing, HBO's Six Feet Under is my favourite series of all time and does not fit the OP's description at all...It's dark, funny, intelligent and brilliantly acted. A masterpiece.
ComradeDuch on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
I only watch 2 TV shows, both are American and neither is about politics or bellinis. Both have English stars. I watch House nad I watch Star Trek Next Generation. It isn't on principle, I just don't really like other shows.
Geushky on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
UK drama has its rare moments but USA is well ahead with the likes of the Sopranos, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Dirty Sexy Money etc.
bystander on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
The Long Firm brilliant and what about George and Mildred? Keep trying The Sopranos but it doesn't work for me, sorry.
MrsMoon on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
For my sins one summer i got completely hooked on Star Trek The Next Generation, and fell madly in lust with Patrick Stewart...And i had champers with him around that time, i was in heaven!
Sable on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
For all those feeling the lack of Six Feet Under and The Sopranos, or sick of waiting for Battlestar Galactica Season 4, Huff and Weeds are fucking brilliant. Oh and the original poster is talking shite, by the way.
Barbersmith on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
It's the same as US comedies. We need to remember that we only get the pick of US TV over here, so there must be a remarkable amount of shite produced there. Especially as some of the stuff we get sent is awful.
Jxx on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Maybe if you could spell The Sweeney, all those letters you write to ITV in crayon would actually reach the right desk and make a difference. Well they would, apart from the fact you're a total bell-end who is unable to relate to anything outside 'their world' probably due to the fact that you have never left your street, you simpering, uncultured, uneducated, shit-for-brains, xenophobic cretin. How about instead of moping around your state-sponsored hovel, and subjecting us to the drivel pouring forth from your spunk-splashed keyboard, you go out and experience other cultures, therefore enabling you to understand concepts beyond your own meagre perception of the world. You cock.
MrsMoon on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Bystander, George and Mildred is epic in scale and timeless, i agree, Tony Sprano wouldn't last five minutes with Yootha Joyce's amourous advances and hen pecking.
ahknowme on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Some US shows are great, some US shows are shit. Same as UK ones. Same as everything.
ahknowme on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
I'm still in love with Columbo. Would give Grissom a roll. And 'The Wire' is fucking brilliant.

Weeds kicks ass!
FlashyVic on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Oh for the return of the 'Bottle Boys' or 'Thats My Boy' or the 'Two of us'. Who needs Frasier , Seinfeld or Curb?
kwebb on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
Metal Mickey and Supergran are prime for a return.
MrsMoon on Wed 09 April 2008 said...
"Hang about, looook out! For Supergran!" I have vague memories from my childhood, Kwebb, wasn't she called Gudren? I always remember what a weird name that was....Great shout, Flashyvic 'That's My Boy!' ha! ha! Wasn't that Mollie Sugden?

How did Frank Spencer and Betty actually concieve Jessica? Surely when he was on the vinegar strokes the bed would have crashed through the floor into the lounge, Frank sits up right with beret covered in plaster, the cat does a woopsey on the carpet and michelle Dotrice says "Oh Frank!"

star trek and battlestar gallactica? you sad fucking nerds get the fuck of this forum. I agree with ahknowme some are shit and some are good from both countries. Although I miss the late and long lamented Jerry Orbach as Detective Briscoe in Law Order for his morbid humour. RIP Jerry

What the fuck is the poster talking about? Look at it this way, American TV - 24, Prison Break, Lost, House, Monk, Battlestar Galactica, South Park, Family Guy, Frisky Dingo, Numb3rs, Scrubs, CSI (I could go on) British TV - Generic reality TV show #1, Generic reality TV show #2, And ITV's big selling point the unremittingly shite Rock Rivals. I don't give a shit about screenwriter's motivation for writing, or if they only write for the "US market with references to US only issues", I fucking enjoy watching them. And if millions of other people enjoy watching them, surely that's the point of its existence...you fuck nut.
RandySpooge on Thu 10 April 2008 said...
Thought of more: Six feet Under, Soparanos, 30 Rock, My Name is Earl, NCIS, Dexter, Mythbusters, American Dad, Metalocalypse. The last decent British TV serial was Spaced. And maybe the News at Ten.
MrsMoon on Thu 10 April 2008 said...
Six Feet Under got an honourable mention in my reply oop there somewhere, fantastic, and i blubbed my heart out during the last 10 minutes, the most awesome ending to a drama i've ever seen.
RandySpooge on Thu 10 April 2008 said...
Must admit I've never even seen it. Meant to, but not had the chance. No idea what Six Feet Under's even about. It looks wicked though. And it's got Michael C Hall in right?
MrsMoon on Thu 10 April 2008 said...
Yes, his first major role...hire the box sets from the library, you won't regret it, it's a great drama, brilliantly acted and funny too.
MrsMoon on Thu 10 April 2008 said...
It's about a dysfuctional family who run a funeral home, but it's so much more than that...you have to see it!
sociopathicgrin on Sat 12 April 2008 said...
24, NYPD Blue, The Sopranos, ER, Lost, Nip/Tuck, Dexter - yeah, the OP is right, who needs these upstarts? They've clearly contributed nothing. None of these shows are anything next to the world-conquering brilliance of Rosemary And Thyme.
