I agree with you up to a point Mrs Moon and I guess it was the same when I was 'growing up' in that I used to hear something and then be curious enough to investigate the influences, or if it were a 'cover' go and look up the original and you can only hope that the same rules apply nowadays. It would also appear that they do because the people that you have mentioned, still sell records.It seems to me, if you read stuff that was being written at the time, the same accusations about songs being derivative was as valid then as it is now.
